History and Customer Care

The Fernwood Group was formed in 1983, and with a trading history of over 30 years, the Group has grown to become a successful and respected player in the UK, solid fuel, stevedoring and bulk road haulage industries.

The Fernwood Group is a privately owned limited company. The Group has a common theme of handling, storing, transporting and trading bulk commodities.

Every Group subsidiary operates to the highest industry standard within its respective commercial sector, with Customer Service being an absolute priority. Whether the company is preparing a single 20kg pre-pack sack of coal, or it is discharging the millionth tonne for the year of Power Station fuel, the level of expertise and product care applied to a customer's product remains the same.

Fernwood Group's successful 30 year trading history clearly demonstrates its fundamental customer care ethos. Each subsidiary company Director has a wealth of knowledge and experience in their respective industry sector which is available for customers to utilise and benefit from.

Flexibility and Rapid Response Times

Many of the Group's long standing customers are 'blue chip' clients whom rely on and benefit from Fernwood's expertise and rapid flexible response times. The company's Shareholders and Directors operate a 'hands on' management style, allowing management decisions to be taken quickly, ensuring rapid response to changing customer requirements, further providing customers with maximum flexibility to their changing demand patterns.

Investment

Fernwood Group invests in its subsidiary businesses to continuously drive performance and customer service. The companies modern fleet of commercial vehicles and wheeled loaders are clear examples of the most up to date engine management and low emission technology being utilised throughout the Group.

Safety

Safety is Fernwood Groups number one priority. Continuous and on-going investment in employee and driver training is strategic to the companies on-going development.

Protecting the Environment

All Fernwood bulk materials stocking grounds are fully licensed and approved under the Environmental Protection Act. Almost all commercial vehicles and wheeled loaders are no more than 3 years old, and operate modern low emission technology engines.

All waste produced by the Group is disposed of and treated in the most environmentally friendly way by a Registered and appropriately licensed waste company.

Providing Employment and Promoting Business Locally

Fernwood Group currently employs over 80 people, the majority of whom live within 12 miles of the company's premises at Watnall, Nottinghamshire or Hull.

A 3 year Apprenticeship Scheme is operated by the company's Commercial Vehicle Workshops. All three current apprentices have been recruited from local schools or colleges.

Supporting the Local Community for over 25 years

Fernwood has continuously donated to many local causes throughout its trading history.

Examples include:

  • Primary School sponsorship for numerous fund raising events
  • Watnall Women's Institute assisting in refurbishment of their premises
    which is now also used by Watnall pre-school play group
  • Scout Groups
  • Church Craft Fairs

Fernwood continues to support the local community and its fund raising events on an on-going basis.

Administration and Facilities

Administration for each Fernwood Group subsidiary takes place at the company's purpose built Head Office at Watnall near Nottingham, strategically located between junctions 26 & 27 of the M1. The 4 acre site consists of two substantial office premises, commercial vehicle workshops, diesel bunkering facilities, secure parking for approximately 80 HGVs and 100 trailers, under cover vehicle and trailer washing facilities.
